CA 101: English Pronunciation for Thai Students

About This Course

There are 13 lessons and one exam in this course.  Most lessons cover 24 words that start with two different letters of the English alphabet, however two lessons are devoted to the most difficult sounds for Thai speakers: R and V.  Words that start with Q are not covered because there aren't many words start with Q in the English language.  Altogether the course covers 288 words.


Prerequisites

This course is intended to be taught to Thai students who already have some exposure to English.  In particular, students must already know how to recognize and pronounce all the letters in the English alphabet.  Students who take this course should also be able to understand simple English sentences and ask simple questions in English.

This course is not recommended for Thai children who are unfamiliar with the English alphabet or who cannot speak rudimentary English.  Children who are unable to recognize the English alphabet or who cannot speak simple English sentences should take the previous course, CA.100 - Beginning English Pronunciation.


How to Teach This Course

This course must be taught with a smart phone.  The teacher will use a smart phone (iPhone or Android) with a speech recognition app such as Line Dict to test proper pronunciation.  At the beginning of class students should be given a printed copy of the lesson.  The procedure for using the phone is as follows:

1. For each word in the lesson the teacher should pronounce the word and ask the entire class to repeat it two times.  If the teacher isn't sure how to pronounce it, they can use the phone's speaker to say the word.  The teacher should then say the example sentence next to the word and ask the class to repeat that sentence two times.

2. The teacher should tell students what the word means in Thai or use the phone's dictionary to translate the word.  There's a space on the lesson for students to write the Thai equivalent.

3. Now the teacher should work with one student at a time.  The teacher should carefully and clearly pronounce the word and the student should repeat it.  Do this three times.

4. After three repetitions the teacher should hold the phone in front of the student and prompt them to pronounce the word.  This is how we evaluate correct pronunciation, which is the focus of this course.

5. If the phone recognizes the word spoken by the student the student is awarded three points.  The student can write their score in the space provided on the lesson.  The teacher can then move on to the next student.

6. If the phone doesn't recognize the word spoken by the student it will show a different word or phrase.  The teacher should then say the word and the student should repeat it, the same way as in Step 3.  Do this three times.

7. Once again the teacher should hold the phone in front of the student and prompt them to pronounce the word.  If the phone recognizes the word on the second try the student is awarded two points and the teacher can move on to the next student.

8. If the phone still doesn't recognize the word spoken by the student the teacher should say the word and the student should repeat it three more times, the same way as in Step 3.  By now the student will have spoken the word 12 times.  Once again the teacher should hold the phone in front of the student and ask them to say it.  If the phone recognizes the word correctly the student is awarded one point and the teacher can move on to the next student.

9. If the phone doesn't recognize the word spoken by the student on the third try the student gets zero points and the teacher can move on to the next student.

10. After all students have been tested on all 12 words they can add up their scores for each word and write the total in the box at the bottom of the Score column.
